Education Minister Dipu Moni has said no irregularities or corruption will be tolerated in the public universities.
“Investigations are underway against those Vice-Chancellors of the public universities, who are allegedly accused of irregularities,” she said this while replying to a question at Chandpur Circuit House on Saturday.
The minister also said university authorities will decide whether they will permit organisational student politics on their campuses or not. “It’s up to them.” she added.
Dipu Moni said the universities operating under the 1973 Ordinance will decide according to that ordinance, while rest of the universities that run under their own set of laws will
decide accordingly. “Actions are being taken against the Vice-Chancellors of public universities after looking into the allegations of irregularities, done by them,” she said.
Reiterating the government goals of modernizing and readdressing the education system of the country, she said, “Ill-motivated politics was being practiced in the name of students’ politics on the campus of Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET).”
She said, “No such news was revealed, even in social media platforms. If we were informed this earlier, action would have been taken against it”
Abrar Fahad, a second-year student of Electronics and Electrical Engineering Department of BUET, was beaten to death allegedly by BCL leaders and activists at Sher-e-Bangla Hall of the university last week. The minister called for raising awareness among people to ensure that politics is practiced in a healthy manner.
Dipu Moni, a lawmaker from Chandpur-3 Constituency, went there to attend an extended meeting of Awami League Chandpur unit.
