A ‘war of words’ between Saudi and Iranian leaders is escalating new tension in the Middle East following the resignation of Lebanon’s Prime Minister Saad al-Hariri on Friday from Riyadh accusing a plot to kill him and destabilize his country.
Hariri — a Sunni Muslim and treated as an ally of Saudi Arabia suddenly fled to Riyadh but Iran claimed he was forced to resign by Saudi authorities and holding him under house arrest.
Saad al-Hariri has earlier blamed Hezbollah — a Shiite political movement in Lebanon with a powerful army operating within the Lebanese state, for attempting to ‘hijack’ Lebanon’s political system.
In his words Iran is plotting from behind to help establish Shiite control over Lebanon’s fragile political system where a
Sunni Prime Minister, a Christian President and Shiite Speaker of Parliament now run the country.
Hariri’s father Rafiq Hariri, a former Prime Minister was similarly killed in a Beirut blast in 2005 and Saad Hariri claims he feared a similar attack before he fled.
The sudden development is adding new tension in the area at a time when the civil war in Syria is apparently closing to an end and Hezbollah, which fought along with Syrian regime army and Iranian Revolutionary Guards — all are Shiite force — is being blamed for flexing muscle to establish control over Lebanese complex political system.
People are already weary of war and its destruction in the region and they don’t want to see the opening of any new confrontation. But the question is whether the leaders on all sides will give peace to the people.
Muslim leaders have become blind to fight themselves when the non-Muslims are killing poor Rohingyas and there is none to protect them..
In the Gulf region, Sunni Saudi Arabia wields considerable influence over Sunni population in Lebanon at a time when Sunni bastion of power in Syria and Iraq is already destroyed. Many believe a dangerous situation may be unfolding in Lebanon if it is not contained at this stage. Need to be mentioned that Lebanon witnessed a long factional civil war in the 1070s when people had suffered the worst.
As the blame and counter blame continues on the condition of Saad Hariri France President Emmanuel Macron is visiting Saudi Arabia on Friday to clear the confusion. Needless to say Lebanon was a France protectorate before it was partitioned from Syria and won independence in 1948
Meanwhile Iran’s accusation that Saudi Arabia is interfering in Lebanon’s internal affairs and it must keep away has further escalated the tension. Following the warning Saudi Arabia, UAE, Kuwait and Bahrain have ordered their nationals in Lebanon on Thursday to return to their respective countries.
The Saudi monarchy is now busy with an unprecedented purge within the royal family and scores of princes and former ministers are under arrest and facing investigation on charges of corruption. It is facing critical time in all fronts.
Meanwhile, Saudi leaders have accused Iran of supplying a long-range missile to Yemen’s Houti rebels who fired it over Riyadh last week only to be intercepted at last moment.
Saudi Crown Prince and de-facto ruler Mohammad bin Salman has accused Iran for the missile saying it is an ‘act of war’ against Saudi Arabia but Iranian President Hassan Rouhani dismissed the claim. Contrary to it, he has warned Saudi Arabia to be aware of the military might of the Islamic Republic. Iran is blaming USA and Israel for the new escalation.
