Police has set up Internet Protocol (IP) cameras on roads and highways (R&H) to control the tailback and identify causes of accidents and persons responsible therefore.
The cameras will also enable to identify the culprits having links to vandalism, arson, accident, snatching, and stealing of vehicles.
Initiative has been taken to ensure safety during the Eid-ul-Azha and the Durga Puja and to maintain constant vigilance.
The cameras have been set up at Amin Bazaar, Savar Bus Stand, Nabinagar and Islampur on the Dhaka-Aricha Highway, at Ashulia, Bipile, Kabirpur and Chandra on the Dhaka-Tangail highway.
The police officers can observe the situation from anywhere with the help of a unique password system, which will be controlled by the Police headquarters.
Inspector General of Police (IGP) Hasan Mahmud Khandaker inaugurated the system at Ashulia Bipile Police Box on Wednesday noon.
He hoped that crime would be diminished if the highways were centrally monitored with the help of this technology. Gradually, the road communications will be under the camera monitoring, he added.
Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of Highway Police said that the officers could monitor the tailback and take measure to remove that. Proper action will be taken against them who will neglect their duties.
As a part of community policing, several self-motivated persons and organizations are taking this initiative, which is being implemented by Habibur Rahman, Superintendent of Police, Dhaka district, sources said.
