IOM urged to bring back BD men from Yemen

Bangladesh has formally requested the International Organization for Migration (IOM) to repatriate Bangladesh nationals got stuck in troubled Yemen, Foreign Secretary M Shahidul Haque said here on Wednesday.
He also said Bangladesh requested India to help repatriate Bangladesh nationals.
India agreed in principle to help Bangladesh depending on availability of space in ship as India is sending a ship to rescue Indians, he added.
The Foreign Secretary said this while talking to reporters at the Foreign Ministry.
He also informed that Bangladesh has sought support from Saudi Arabia to rescue Bangladesh nationals.
Meanwhile, the Indian High Commission in Dhaka tweeted saying, “India to assist in evacuation of Bangladesh nationals from Yemen.”
An Indian ship, INS Sumitra, is in the region. Its services will also be utilised to ensure the safety of Indian nationals who will be repatriated or evacuated by sea. Also, the Indian Navy is pressing into service two additional ships, INS Mumbai and INS Tarkash, according to Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), India.
Some 1500-3000 Bangladesh nationals are living in Yemen and all of them are not interested to come back, Haque said.
Earlier, Bangladesh issued a statement supporting Saudi-led efforts in Yemen.
The Foreign Secretary said the situation in Yemen is sudden one and Bangladesh has taken a pragmatic and realistic position which has been largely appreciated by all including Saudi Arabia.
A couple of days back, two Bangladeshi engineers sought help from the government to rescue them from Yemen.
The Foreign Secretary said they are in touch with Bangladeshis there.
It gets difficult as there is no Embassy in Yemen.
Meanwhile, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has opened a’ helpline’ with specific contact point so that Bangladeshi nationals living in Yemen can stay in touch with the officials concerned.

Indian External Affairs Ministry said approximately 4,000 Indian nationals remain in the conflict zone in Yemen.
