Khaleda Zia should ‘stay home for her own good’, Information Minister Hasanul Haq Inu has said.
The BNP chairperson is an ‘instigator’ herself, he told reporters at the Secretariat on Thursday.
He was responding to queries about the attacks on her motorcade and staff during the election campaign for party-backed mayoral candidates for Dhaka.
“She has damaged so many, she should be patient and stay home.” He denied accusations that the government was obstructing Khaleda’s campaign for the election slated for Apr 28.
“There is no question of resisting Khaleda Zia on the streets. That is not our stance,” said the JaSaD chief.
The BNP chief motorcade was attacked by armed assailants on three consecutive days – at Kawran Bazar, Fakirapool and Bangla Motor. One of her security staff Lt (retd) Samiul Islam was severely beaten on the street by stick-wielding men.
“She is already an accused, we are getting ready to hold her accountable for the people she has burnt. I believe it is best if she focuses on that.”
The minister said law enforcers are ‘alert’ about those who have clashed with Khaleda’s team. “They are and will continue to combat this matter.”
When asked if the ruling Awami League activists were behind the attacks, he said, “Government supporters are not behind this. But it is unfortunate, we have tried to provide security.
“She went over Hatirjheel to return home quickly because we provided security, otherwise how could she have left the area unharmed?”
As for the possibility of more attacks on the former prime minister, he said, “We’ll try to provide security. I can’t predict the chances of covert attacks.”
