Staff Reporter :
Information Minister Hasanul Haq Inu on Sunday urged the journalist community to submit the list of repressed journalists within 72 hours.
“I’m requesting you (journalists) to submit a list containing the names of repressed journalists to my office within 72 hours. We want to see why the journalists came under attack,” he said while addressing a discussion at the National Press Club in city.
A faction of Bangladesh Federal Union of Journalists (BFUJ) organised the discussion to mark the World Press Freedom Day.
Termed the Bangladesh media as live, the Information Minister said it has been expanding for the last six years.
“Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina tolerates her government’s criticism. We don’t believe in shirking policy about the media. Rather, we do believe in expansion of media,” Inu said.
He, however, said some stray incident could take place but such incident does not mean the government policy.
“Yet, if we are notified about repression on journalists we take effective measures instantly in order to prevent such incident,” the Information Minister said.
Referring to story on executed war criminal Muhammad Kamaruzzaman, Inu said some media reported that he had been hanged for three minutes while other published news that he had been hanged for 13 minutes.
“Even some media reported that how and in what way his (Kamaruzzaman) tendons were cut off. The media also detailed about the backbone of Kamaruzzaman,” he said.
The Information Minister said through writing such story a section of journalists had wanted to create a sensation before the nation about the war criminals.
