Introduce a dependable public transport system

A CIRCULAR route bus service was launched on Wednesday between Dhanmondi and Azimpur in Dhaka city. This service will cover the Dhanmondi, Science Lab, New Market, and Azimpur areas. It was inaugurated by the Mayor of Dhaka South City Corporation. Bangladesh Road Transport Corporation (BRTC) will supervise the service. The lowest fair has been fixed at Tk10 while highest is Tk30.
The city authorities are optimistic that this service will lessen gridlock in parts of Dhaka, ensure better customer service and road discipline, plus make a positive impact on this city. In this regard, Dhaka Metropolitan Police Commissioner said: “We want to re-establish discipline in the transportation sector within the next 15 days. We do not want any more casualties on the roads…..Along with the newly-launched bus service on these routes, two more services-in Uttara and Motijheel-will soon be introduced. This initiative will lessen the number of private and non-motorized vehicles on the streets.”
We do congratulate the city authorities for taking sincere efforts in a bid to reduce traffic jam in the city. Especially, DMP’s initiatives to bring discipline in the road transport sector is highly appreciating. So far we know, the new Dhanmondi-Azimpur route bus service was introduced following the recommendation of DMP. The DMP earlier had placed some recommendations to upgrade the capital’s road traffic management including introduction of a bus service in busy areas to reduce congestion caused by private vehicles and rickshaws.
World Bank report said the average traffic speed in Dhaka has dropped from 21 kilometres per hour to 7 kmph in the last 10 years. By 2035, the speed might drop to 4kmph, which is slower than the walking speed. Traffic congestion in Dhaka eats up around 5 million working hours every day and costs the country USD 11.4 billion every year. Hundreds of private cars and other vehicles ply on the city roads at a time with creating huge traffic jam.
The public transport system of Dhaka is not adequate and properly routed. If a dependable public transport system could be introduced, the pressure of private cars and other vehicles will be less. And the Dhaka residents will not have to be hostages of rugged bus drivers and owners.
