International Women’s Day was observed on March 8 across the country as elsewhere in the globe with a call to ensure women’s empowerment and equality at every level.
This year’s theme for the day was ‘Empowering women-empowering humanity: Picture it!’
Different socio-cultural organisations chalked out elaborate programmes to mark the day.
The day began with lightening candles by several hundred students at Central Shaeed Minar premises in Dhaka 12:00am, followed by taking oath.
Noted personality Sultana Kamal administered the oath taking ceremony. The International Women’s Day is marked every year on March 8 with the call for greater equality at every sphere of life.
The Women and Children Affairs Ministry organised a programme at Bangabandhu International Conference Centre in the capital on that day where the Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina spoke at the programme as the chief guest.
The Action/2015 Bangladesh Coalition hosted a ‘boat rally’ in the River Brahmapurta in Mymenisingh town on International Women’s Day 2015.
In 2015, International Women’s Day highlighted the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action, a historic roadmap signed by 189 governments 20 years ago that sets the agenda for realising women’s rights.
While there have had been many achievements since then, many serious gaps remain.
President Abdul Hamid and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina have issued separate messages and greeted country’s women folk.
Observing that the contribution of women to family, society and the state is immense, the President underscored the need for ensuring their rights and empowerment alongside providing them with due honour.
He also urged all to work together to protect the rights of women, ensure their empowerment and equal opportunities.
In her message, the Prime Minister called upon all to make a promise to create a world based on equality in order to ensure women’s human rights, logical rights, empowerment and dignity.
Meanwhile, On March 8 on ACI premises in the capital ‘Persona-Savlon Freedom Ajker Nari’ powered by Dabur Vatika Hair oil for the 3rd time honoured nine eminent, talented and successful women in their respective fields on the occasion of International Women’s Day.
Cultural Affairs Minister Asaduzzaman Noor graced the event as the chief guest and eminent drama personality Ramendu Majumdar was present there as the special guest on the occasion.
Besides beauty specialist, Editor of monthly Canvas and Managing Director of Persona, Kanis Almas Khan, Managing Director of ACI Salt and Executive Director of ACI Ltd, Syed Alamgir, Country Manager of Dabur (ACCPL), Sanjay Munshi, Executive Editor of Canvas, Sheikh Saifur Rahman were also present in the award giving ceremony.
‘Persona-Savlon Freedom Ajker Nari powered by Dabur Vatika Hair Oil 2015’ award winners were Ferdousi Mojumder (Lifetime), Rokia Afzal Rahman (Industrialist), Dr Firdausi Qadri (Healthcare), Nasreen Fatema Awal (Entrepreneur), Rina Latif (Fashion), Luna Shamsuddoha (IT), Dr Shahida Akhter (Social Service), Sabrina Islam (Corporate) and Sharmin Sultana Sumi (Music), beside that one special ‘Brave & Beautiful’ award has given to Bandana Saha by Dabur Vatika.
