Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Saturday said the government has a plan to construct an international standard theatre complex as there is no such hall in the country for producing good stage dramas.
“My pain is that there’s no international standard theater complex having all modern facilities in Bangladesh…we want to construct one,” she said. The Prime Minister was speaking at the inaugural programme of newly constructed Bangladesh Mahila Samity Complex Building at city’s Bailey Road.
Sheikh Hasina said she had talked to the Finance Minister in this connection. “The Finance Minister is very much interested in it, and he said there’ll be no fund problem.”
The Prime Minister said she had chosen a place for the theater hall.
“We can build it there,” she said without mentioning its name. Hasina mentioned that the theater hall can be built at the proposed convention centre just beside the Padma River on completion of the Padma Bridge. “We’ll build a complex with that convention
center and the theater hall can be built there.” Talking about the theater hall, the Prime Minister said its stage will move automatically and there will be no need to change the set repeatedly.
Hasina mentioned that whenever she went outside the country she tried to go to any theater. “I saw helicopter landing on the stage, train passing through the stage. This is the age of digital technology…. this is not a tough job to do, but in our country there is no theater like that.” The Prime Minister said she saw modern theater halls in Trinidad Tobago. “And we won’t have such a hall…this cannot be…once we had some constrains, we’ve overcome those… gone are the days.”
Presided over by Social Welfare Secretary Dr Chowdhury M Babul Hasan, the function was addressed, among others, by Bangladesh Mahila Samity President Sitara Ahsanullah and Samity general secretary Tania Bakht.
Recalling the contributions of cultural activists in each and every struggle and movement of the country, the Prime Minister underscored the need for strengthening cultural movement alongside women’s development, as her government is ready to do everything possible for the advancement of cultural activities in the country.
Referring the construction of two auditoriums in the complex, she said these stages would contribute to the advancement of stage plays in the country. Terming Mahila Samity as a traditional organisation for the overall development of distressed, ignored, underprivileged women and children of the country, Hasina said the organisation offers various vocational courses, including computer training, and English language courses for women.
She said women’s social standing has been consolidated everywhere in Bangladesh. “It’s a rare example that the Speaker, Leader of the House, the Deputy Leader and Leader of the Opposition are women in Bangladesh.”
