The Amar Ekushey and the International Mother Language Day was observed in the port city as elsewhere across the country with due respect and solemnity. Chittagong Central Shaheed Minar turned into a human sea shortly after zero hours with the presence of hundreds of people from all walks of life.
Leaders of different political parties, socio-cultural and professional organizations and people from all walks of life gathered at the Central Shaheed Minar to pay respect to the martyred language heroes and placed wreaths one after another at the Shaheed Minar at 12.01 last night.
To mark the day, different political, professional and socio-cultural organisations held various programs, including discussion, Milad Mahfil, poetry recitation, arts competition for children, voluntary blood donation and cultural functions in the city.
A smart contingent of Chittagong Metropolitan Police (CMP), paid guard of honour at the Shaheed Minar here at one minute past 12 midnight. Housing and Public Works Minister Engineer Mosharrf Hossain was the first to place a wreath at the Shaheed Minar.
He was followed by State Minister for Land Saifuzzaman Chowdhury, Chittagong City Corporation mayor A ZM Nasir Uddin, City Awami League (AL) leaders, Divisional Commissioner of Chittagong Mohammad Abdul Mannan, Deputy Inspector General of Police, Chittagong range Dr ASM Moniruzzaman, Commissioner of Chittagong Metropolitan Police Iqbal Bahar, Deputy Commissioner of Chittagong Mohammad Zillur Rahman Chowdhury, Chairman of Chittagong Development Authority Abdus Salam, District Administrator MA Salam, President of Chittagong city Mohila AL Hasina Mohiuddin and Superintendent of police Nure Alam Mina.
Besides, different political parties, including Chittagong city unit of AL, North and South AL district units, Chhatra League, Jubo League, Chittagong City Unit of BNP, Chittagong Press Club, Chittagong Union of Journalists (CUJ) and Chittagong TV Journalist Associations, Muktijoddha Command Council of Chittagong City and District, and Chittagong District Bar Association also placed wreaths at the Shaheed Minar.
In the morning, students from different educational institutions and socio-cultural organizations carrying different colourful banners, festoons and placards placed wreaths at the Shaheed Minar.
Vice-Chancellor of Chittagong University (CU) Prof Iftakher Uddin paid tributes to the language martyrs by placing wreaths at CU Shaheed Minar while Vice-Chancellor of Chittagong University of Engineering and technology (CUET) Prof Dr Rafiqul Islam, Vice-Chancellor of University of Science and Technology (USTC) Dr Provat Chandra Barua placed wreaths at CUET and USTC Shaheed Minars respectively in the morning
