Int’l confce on ‘War and Colonies 1914-1918’ begins

A two-day international conference on “War and Colonies from 1914-1918” begins here at Nabab Nawab Ali Chowdhury Senate Bhaban auditorium of Dhaka University (DU).
DU and Alliance Francaise de Dhaka jointly organised this conference on Tuesday in collaboration with Institute Francais, France Embassy, Ministry of the Liberation War and the Liberation War Museum.
Vice-Chancellor (VC) Professor Dr AAMS Arefin Siddique inaugurated the conference as the chief guest. The inaugural function was also addressed by Ambassador & Head of Delegation of the European Union to Bangladesh William Hannah. Prof Dr Samuel Berthet of Shiv Nadar University, India conducted the function. Welcoming scholars of international repute from different parts of globe to Dhaka University, Prof Dr AAMS Arefin Siddique said the conference will raise interesting issues, generate new ideas which will form bases for further research and critical reflection.
He said, “We can glorify war and say that the First World War resulted in contacts between the European soldiers with soldiers from the colonies, such cultural exchanges changed the mindsets of Europe and eventually led to the independence of different colonies. Others would argue that the war was just another layer of oppression.”
The VC further said, “In Bangladesh, we understand the pains of war.
