UNB, Dhaka :
Interns at Sir Salimullah Medical College and Mitford Hospital staged an hour-long work abstention on Monday demanding cancellation of the government’s decision extending their internship to two years from one year.
As per the latest government decision, an intern will have to complete two years of internship-one year at the respective medical colleges and one-year at any upazila health complex.
Protesting the decision, interns of the hospital gathered on the hospital
premises around 12 noon and continued the work abstention till 1pm.
The demonstrators warned that the interns of all government medical colleges will continue their movement unless the government withdraws the decision.
The latest decision over the internship was taken to resolve the shortage of qualified doctors at upazila health complexes and so that patients are able to get better treatment on a regular basis.
“If we complete internship at our respective medical colleges, we’ll be able to learn properly from the best professors and supervisors which is quite impossible at upazila health complexes. Rural patients will get even better treatment from us only if the government allows us to complete internship at our own medical colleges,” said intern Nuruzzaman.
