The Inter-University Handball and the Basketball tournaments (men and women) began at Islamic University (IU) in Kushtia on Saturday.
IU Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr M Harun-Ur-Rashid Askari declared the competitions open.
Prof Dr M Selim Toha, Treasurer of the university, was present as special guest, while Pro-Vice Chancellor Prof Dr M Shahinoor Rahman presided at the inaugural session.
Among others, IU Registrar in-charge SM Abdul Latif, Student Advisor Prof Dr Paresh Chandra Barman, IU Syndicate Member Prof Dr Mahbubar Rahman, Acting Proctor Anisur Rahman and Director of the Physical Education Department Dr M Sohel Rana, attended the opening session.
M Ashadur Rahman, Assistant Director of IU Physical Education department said that a total of nine male teams and seven female teams are taking part in the tourmeys.
Around 14 university teams are there in the Basketball competition, he added.
On the opening day,Islamic University beat Bangladesh Agriculture University (BAU) by 44-18 goals, while IU female team beat Rajshahi University (RU) in Handball ccmpetition.
