Cox’s Bazar Correspondent :
A probe body has identified several individuals and organisations for instigating the Rohingya mass rally at Ukhiya’s Kutupalong refugee camp on August 25.
On September 3, the body submitted its report to the NGO Affairs Bureau, naming the individuals and organisations.
Signed by Cox’s Bazar Deputy Commissioner Md Kamal Hossain, the report also stated the role of non-governmental organisations (NGOs) in organising the gathering, as
well as their activities in the refugee camps.
Thousands of Rohingyas attended the rally marking the August 25 what Rohingyas described as “Genocide Day” and placed a number of demands, including their safety, citizenship and punishment of those involved in killings of Rohingyas in Rakhine State of Myanmar.
Disturbed by the huge rally, the government formed a three-member probe committee on August 27.
Foreign Minister Dr AK Abdul Momen earlier said the government will take appropriate steps in consultation with all stakeholders to deal with the situation like mass rally held by Rohingyas in Cox’s Bazar.
Apart from local Rohingya leaders, names of several lawyers, college professors, officials from the Refugee Relief and Repatriation Commission (RRRC), police and other organizations have surfaced in the report.
The report said the rally, which was to commemorate the two years of their latest exodus from Myanmar, was orchestrated by a group of local Rohingya leaders together with the RRRC, Voice of Rohingya, Arakan Rohingya Society for Peace and Humanity Rights (ARSPH) and non-governmental organization ADRA, without seeking any prior approval from the district administration. Two NGOs – ADRA and AL Markajul Islami Sangstha – provided t-shirts and banners for the rally.
It was also mentioned that ARSPH’s advisory committee includes a Supreme Court lawyer, a public prosecutor of Cox’s Bazar District Sessions’ Judges Court, a public prosecutor of the Anti Corruption Commission, a researcher from Rajshahi University and a police assistant sub-inspector posted at the camp.
