Sugarcane has been severely damaged in Mazra attack Panchbibi upazila of Joypurhat. Sugarcane trees and leaves have dried up. The piece that is still alive is small in size. Field sugarcane is not going to be protected from insect attack even with medicine.
Insect infestation is high in Bagjana, Dharanji and Aymarsulpur Unions of Ghesha Upazila bordering India. Nurul Islam of Srimantapur village said that 3 bighas of land has been prepared for planting sugarcane, seeds, fertilizers and labor have cost Rs 50,000 to Rs 60,000. Nazir Hossain of Nandail village said he planted sugarcane on 10 bighas of land at a cost of Tk 2.5 lakh this year. He could not protect sugarcane from insects even after applying many medicines. They said that after eating the insects, the money spent on the land will not be enough. Michir Ali Mandal, former commander of the freedom fighters of the upazila, said, “I cultivate sugarcane every year along with other crops, but this year the insects have eaten my fortune.”
Md. Rabiul Islam, Panchbibi Sub-Zone officer of Joypurhat Sugar Mill, said that despite the target of cultivating sugarcane in about 2,000 acres of land in the upazila this year, only 850 acres have been cultivated. It has been interrupted by rains for several days in a row at the time when the sugarcane tree is about to grow. Sugarcane yield is also a little less this year due to insect attack.
