Violating government rules, a section of influential people committing fish farming by encroaching the river ‘Gagona’ in Dumuria upazila of Khulna district.
On a recent visit, this correspondent talked to some villagers and came to learn that around 4 kms river Gagona at Gutudia union in Dumuria upazila of Khulna district is now under the illegal occupation of some influential people who put net plank in the middle of the river, affecting the plying of water transports. Villagers are facing troubles for this reason.
Dumuria upazila land office sources said, one Taposh Mollick, in favour of ‘Paschim(West) Beel Pabla Cooperative Society’ took lease around 3 years ago after putting revenue of Tk. 725 from the office of assistant commissioner (AC), land, Dumuria. In the same way some other influential persons sold pieces of river side lands to the villagers as sub lesse taking huge amount of money. Later, the sub lesses started fish farming without any hesitation.
Joydev Dhali, a fish trader of village West Beel Pabla told this correspondent that the river ‘Gagona’ is the only water way of villages Rangpur, Deana, Daulatpur, North Beel Pabla. The inhabitants of these villages are dependant upon the river which is now under illegal occupation of some influential people.
Bishu Bairagi, a farmer of the same village also echoed with Joydev.
A UP member said, the UP chairman of Gutudia union parishad Mostofa sarwar announced over mike to remove net planks from the river several times, but in vain.
On condition of anonymity a villager said, Gagona river is now being controlled by some influential persons including UP member Newton Roy, Suraj Sardar and Dulal Roy.
Sub lessee UP member Newton Roy said, “I have occupied only a canal of 6 acres and conducting fish farming, but I’m ignorant whether fish farming putting net planks over the river is lawful or not.”
Md. Shamsuddwza, Upazila Nirbahi officer (UNO) of Dumuria upazila said, “No person or organization has right to give sub lease after taking lease from the government.”
He said adding that nobody is entitled to stop the plying of water transports by putting net or other things on the river and lease of such persons might be cancelled accordingly.
