UNB, Dhaka :
The overall general inflation rate eased further in January to 6.04 percentage point compared to 6.11 percentage point in December, 2014 although the food inflation showed a rising trend last month due to disruption in supply amid the ongoing political unrest in the country.
“The overall general point-to-point inflation rate in January this year reached 6.04 percentage point,” said Planning Minister AHM Mustafa Kamal on Tuesday.
The minister said this while releasing the monthly Consumer Price Index (CPI) at a press briefing at the NEC-2 conference room.
State Minister for Finance and Planning MA Mannan, Planning Division Secretary Bhuiyan Shafiqul Islam, Informatics and Statistics Division Secretary Suraiya Begum and Planning Commission members were present.
According to the Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics (BBS) data, the food inflation rate in January soared to 6.07 percentage point, up from 5.86 percentage point in December last.
The non-food inflation rate in January, however, declined slightly to 6.01 percentage point, down from 6.48 percentage point in December last.
Asked about the growing trend of food inflation rate, the Planning Minister attributed it to the countrywide disruption in food supply chain due to the ongoing political situation.
About the declining trend of non-food inflation rate, he said the oil price in the international market is gradually falling and this has also cast an impact on the price of the non-food items.
The BBS data showed that the general inflation rate in January was 6.48 percentage point in urban areas, while 5.81 percentage point in the rural areas compared to the December figures of 6.50 percentage point in urban areas and 5.89 percentage point in rural areas.
The food inflation slightly increased in rural areas in January this year to 5.79 percentage point, edging past 5.78 percentage point in the previous month of December.
The non-food inflation rate in rural areas declined slightly to 5.84 percentage point in January compared to 6.12 percentage point in December last year.
In urban areas, the point to point food inflation rate increased to 6.69 percentage point in January from 6.07 percentage point in December last year.
