Infants will get Vitamin A Plus capsule

Children aged between six to 59 months will be administered Vitamin A Plus capsule on April 25. The campaign will be conducted under the auspices of the Public Health and Nutrition Institute under the Ministry of Health & Family Welfare with assistance of the UNICEF in the city as elsewhere in the country.
The under- five babies, who were immunized with Vitamin A Plus Capsules anytime during the past three months period, cannot be immunized during the campaign. Besides,
special door-to-door campaign will be conducted for the next couple of days to administer Vitamin A Plus Capsules to the babies, who will not be able to get the same on April 25 to make the program a success in the city.
At South City Zone of Ward No. 54 of Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC), about 4,461 trained volunteers will administer the capsules to these infants at a time. Besides the children of the locality, children who are riding a launch or a bus as well as floating children will also be included in the program in the camp of DSCC on that day which will run from 8:00am till 5:00 pm.
This information was disclosed in a workshop arranged by DSCC on Monday afternoon at Nagar Bhaban Millonaytan of the capital .This campaign has been taken by DSCC with the aim to reduce the percentage of Vitamin A deficiency induced night blindness disease in infants to below one percent as well as to improve the body resistance of these children which will reduce their mortality rate .
Health Officer of DSCC, Brigadier General Md. Mahbubur Rahman was President of the meeting where the Chief Guest was Shawkat Osman , the Administrator of DSCC. Special Guests of Honor were, Chief Executive Officer, Md. Ansar Ali Khan of DSCC and Alamgir Hossain, Director of Public Health Department. Among others present in the workshop were important officials of the Health Department of DSCC, Health Workers, NGO workers, etc.
In the program, it was disclosed that DSCC has completed all preparations with the help of NGO workers to give National Vitamin A capsule to infants on April 25. Among the three and a half lakh kids targeted, 43 thousand and 514 kids are between the age group of six to eleven months and 2 lakh, 85 thousand and 200 infants are between the age group of one to five years.
A documentary on the effectiveness and benefits of Vitamin A was displayed in the workshop to show where and how the infants will be administered the Vitamin A plus capsules.
The chief guest, Shawkat Osman of DSCC said, ‘ We have to make the project of April 25 a success. Besides giving adequate training to the volunteers, we have to make all citizens including the working people aware that this workshop is underway.’
He also said, ‘All officials have to ensure that no day care center is left out of the project. The rate of child mortality in Bangladesh is now less because of effective immunization programs in Bangladesh.’
President of the meeting, Brigadier General Md. Mahbubur Rahman said, ‘ This project has reduced night blindness in children in urban areas. Side by side, their body resistance has improved. Whereas 20 years ago, the average life span of people in Bangladesh was 40, after the Vitamin A project started, this figure has scaled up to 60 which is the main success of this project.’
The speakers in the program said , ‘On April 25, one blue colored Vitamin A capsule will be administered to six to eleven months old infants, and two red colored Vitamin A capsules will be administered to twelve to fifty nine month old infants . It will also be ensured in the DSCC camp that all kids who are above six months age are getting a balanced meals along with mother’s milk .’
