Industries now over one-third of GDP

Industries Minister Amir Hossain Amu on Thursday told revealed the industries sector is now contributing just over one-third of the Gross Domestic Products (GDP) of the country, almost double its share from 10 years ago. The sector’s contribution to GDP in the 2007-8 fiscal had been 17.7 percent.
“We have noticed a positive change in the economic sector following good performance of the industry factories and various proper steps in the last five years. The country’s per capita income too has nearly doubled to $1751 from $917 in 2009,” he also said.
The veteran minister made these while addressing a press briefing on the ministry’s success in the last five years held at his department on Thursday.
Amir Hossain Amu further said: “The country’s export income hit $36.7 billion in the 2017-18 fiscal, was $14.1 billion in FY2007-2008.”
He pointed out to achieve sustainable and skill base industrialization, the ministry has adopted various policies including National Industry policy-2016, Motorcycle industry development policy-2018, handicraft policy-2015, National Small and Medium-Sized Enterprises (SME) Policy, Geographical Indication (GI) act 2013, and Bangladesh Ship Recycling Bill, 2018,” he added.
He further added that An Active Pharmaceutical Ingredients (API) industrial park of public-private partnership was being set up on more than 200 acre land at a cost of Tk 381 crore in Gazaria of Munshiganj. Raw materials of medicine will be produced on 42 plots in the city.
“Bangladesh Small and Cottage Industries Corporation (BSCIC) is being built on 400 acre land costing Tk 628.10 crore in Sirajganj to strengthen rural economy. Around 100000 people will be employed in jobs there. Besides, the construction work of light engineering, plastic, comical and printing industrial city is being continued in Dhaka and its surrounding areas,” he also said.
