REB asks for modern tech pre-paid meters

Rural Electrification Board (REB) should provide power connection by installing modern technology and pre-paid metres both in the household and industries at all the Palli Bidyut Samities (PBS), said AR Khan, Chairman of Bangladesh Energy Regulatory Commission (BERC).
Addressing as chief guest BERC Chairman made the comment at General Managers conference of all the Palli Bidyut Samities, held at REB Bhaban on Saturday.
All the Palli Bidyut Samities (PBSs) were instructed to provide pending electricity connections to industries on a priority basis, he also said.
REB Chairman Major General Moin Uddin, BERC members Rahman Murshed, Managing Director of power Grid Company Md Masum Al-Beruni, managing Director of West zone Power Distribution Company Md Shafiq Uddin, PDB member Abul Bashar Khan, among others, spoke at the function.
REB Chairman said, as per schedule majority people of 463 upazilas will be covered under connection of Palli Bidyut by December 2016. Besides, REB will be brought under electricity network of the country by 2021 as per commitment of Prime Minister, Major General Moin Uddin said. He instructed all the general managers of the PBSs to carry out this instruction during an hour-long video conference at the REB headquarters in Dhaka.
Sources with the REB said that during the conference, the REB chairman asked the general managers of the PBSs to provide electricity connections to industries, along with residential customers, on a “priority basis”. He particularly instructed the PBSs to provide connections to those industrial units whose electricity connections are in “pending status”.
He warned the officials that if connections were not provided to the industries, the officials those responsible would suffer harsh consequences.
