Xinhua, Jakarta :
Indonesia’s trade balance posted a lower surplus in August as hike of import exceeded export, the national statistic bureau announced here on Thursday.
Sasmito Hadi Wibowo, the deputy at the bureau, said that trade surplus narrowed to 290 million U.S. dollars in August from 598.3 million U.S. dollars in July.
Import expanded 36.84 percent to 12.34 billion U.S. dollars in August from a month earlier, but fell 0.5 percent on year, the deputy said.
Export grew 32.54 percent to 12.63 billion U.S. dollars in August on month, but was down 0.74 percent from a year earlier, he added.
Indonesia’s on-oil and gas exports posted a 2.76 percent growth to 11.5 billion U.S. dollars in August from a year earlier, the first hike in 16 months, according to him.
The rise occurred as the Southeast Asia’s biggest economy has been struggling to boost shipments of products overseas amid weakening of global commodity prices.
Most of Indonesia’s exported products comprise natural resource products and agricultural products.
The cumulative of exports at the first eight months dropped 10. 6 percent to 91.73 billion U.S. dollars on yearly basis, and imports fell 9.42 percent to 87.53 billion U.S. dollars, Sasmito said.
