Two Indian surgeons, specialising in brain and heart surgeries, have recently joined Zainul Haque Sikder Women’s Medical College and Hospital.
Prof Saiz Uddin Kabir, Principal of the college, introduced both the surgeons to the members of the press at a ‘Press Meet’ held on the hospital premises on Monday.
The surgeons are, Cardio Thoracic Surgeon Dr Lokesh BM and Neuro Surgeon Dr Hariprakash Chakravarthy, both of who have had vast exposures in quality surgeries in various reputed hospitals in India, including renowned Apollo Hospitals.
Dr Lokesh BM specialises in keyhole cardiac surgeon or in other words an advanced procedure that involves minimally invasive surgery avoiding cut through the breast bone and making an incision of eight to 12 inches to get access to the heart.
“This is a new technique that has many advantages, for instance, it allows faster recovery and is far less painful as it involves fewer incision during the surgery,” said Dr Lokesh BM.
Dr Lokesh BM has a good reputation of performing open heart surgeries on beating heart, heart valve replacements, repairing birth defects in heart chambers, and also performing heart surgeries on new born babies.
In response to a question from Bangladesh Post Dr Lokesh said, “We are here also to transfer technology. The advance techniques to be applied during surgeries here would be exposed for academic and research purposes. We also have a number of most advanced diagnostic and surgical equipment which would also be used to train local talents.”
Dr Lokesh has many national and international publications. Since joining he already has conducted more than 50 complex heart surgeries at ZH Sikder Hospital. He worked for the Manipal Hospital, Apollo Hospital and Sri Jayadeva Institute of Cardiology in India for long. He joined ZH Sikder Medical College & Hospital as the Chief Cardio Thoracic and Vascular Surgeon and as the Hospital Administrator.
Dr Hariprakash, on the other hand, joined the hospital as the Chief Brain and Spine Surgeon at the Neurosciences Institute. He is a well known Neurosurgeon from Bangalore, India. He has over 10 years of experience in treating patients suffering neurological problems.
Under his supervision Dr Hariprakash trained some of the best Neurosurgeons in India. He is a specialist in Advanced Endoscopic Skull Base Surgery, Endovascular Surgery, Endoscopic Pituitary and Skull Base Surgery, Spine Deformity Surgery, Brain Tumor and Epilepsy Surgery.
In reply to a question from Bangladesh Post, Dr Hariprakash said, “The idea of working in Bangladesh is not just to transfer advanced techniques in brain and spine surgeries which are pretty intricate but also to offer ‘quality and affordable’ surgeries in this field.”
He said, “I learnt that a huge number of patients in Bangladesh requiring brain and spine surgeries travel to India, Thailand for advanced treatment. I can confidently say that patients no longer require travelling abroad. Just for an example, we have world’s most advance microscope which allows very high resolution images during brain or spine surgeries. If you have such modern facilities here why would patients opt to spend money abroad.”
Dr Hariprakash explained that with the support of a series of most advanced surgical equipment and paramedics, the hospital would be able to perform same quality of surgeries done in Thailand or India.
Dr Hariprakash also performs brain and spine surgeries on children. He already has conducted more than 30 complex brain tumor and spinal surgeries. He has worked at Sapthagiri Institute of Medical Science, M.S.
