S Korea became champions in the Hero Asian Champions Trophy men’s hockey tournament defeating Japan by 4-2 goals in the penalty shoot-out of the final at the Maulana Bhashani National Hockey Stadium on Wednesday.
The stipulated 60-minute match ended in a 3-3 draw. Thus, the fate of the match was decided in the penalty shoot-out and South Korea clinched the champions title of the gala hockey meet by beating Japan.
India finished third in the Hero Asian Champions Trophy men’s hockey tournament beating Pakistan by 4-3 goals in a place-deciding match at the same venue on the same day.
Harmanpreet Singh of India put his team ahead using a penalty corner in the second minute of the match.
Afraz of Pakistan leveled the margin by a spectacular display in the 10th minute.
India got three penalty corners in the second quarter but failed to convert those into goal.
Abdul Rana of Pakistan made it 2-1 capitalizing a penalty corner in the 33nd minute of the match.
Sumit of India equalized the margin by a superb field goal in the 45th minute of the game.
Barun Kumar of India increased the tally into 3-2 utilizing a penalty corner in the 53rd minute of the clash.
Akashdeep Singh of India made it 4-2 by an extra-ordinary field goal in the 57th minute of the clash.
After one minute Nadim Ahmed reduced the margin (4-3) by scoring a goal.
A total of five teams took part in the Asian Championship Trophy men’s hockey tournament, the most prestigious hockey meet of Asia. They are: Hosts Bangladesh, South Korea, Japan, India and Pakistan.
