India dump Sri Lanka 5-0 in SAFF U-16 Championship opener

Sourav Meher slammed a brilliant hat-trick saw defending champions India got off to a good start in the 3rd edition of six-nation SAFF U-16 Youth Championship when they dumped Sri Lanka by 5-0 goals in the one-sided opening group A match held on Sunday at the Sylhet Divisional Stadium.
In the day’s match, Surav Meher opened an account for India in the 31st minute. The lead doubled to 2-0 from a suicidal goal. The ball found the net after Sri Lankan skipper tried to save the attempt taken by India’s Jeremi Laldinpuya from close range in the 47th minute.
Sourav Meher scored his second and third goal for India in the 49th minute while M Sajahan further widened the India’s margin in the 66th minute. Sourav Meher completed his hat-trick scoring his third and fifth goal for India 73rd minute of the match.
India completely dominated the whole proceeding and notched their deserving victory while Sri Lanka were totally off colored on the day.
Earlier, Finance Minister AMA Muhith, who formally inaugurated the meet as the chief guest, enjoyed the India-Sri Lanka match.
India will play their next group match against Bangladesh on Thursday (Aug-13) while Sri Lanka will meet host Bangladesh on Tuesday (Aug-11) at the same venue.
Monday’s match: Nepal vs Maldives at 5 pm at the same venue.
