With three-day long programmes to observe 120th birth anniversary of Poet Jibanananda Das has been started at his working place Brojo Mohun College campus of his ancestral city Barishal on Saturday noon.
Uttoron Sangskritik Sangathan, a cultural-literary organisation of the college was organiser of the festival and prof Shafiqur Rahman Shikdar, principal of the college, flying banner inaugurated the programmes of the festival.
The festival would be open from 9:00 AM-9:00 PM with about 30 stalls including book fair and showcasing native culture of the Bengali life and tradition.
Discussion on life and achievement of the poet, his influence on Bangla language and literature, recitation of poems, essay writing and painting competition also arranged at the festival.
In afternoon session of the first day of the festival discussion and cultural function were arranged at the festival ground.
Ram Chandra Das, divisional commissioner of Barishal, was chief guest of the programme.
Jubayer Hossain Shahed, president Uttaron, presided over the sessions of the inauguration day.
Among others Udoy Shankar Das, convener of the festival sub-committee, Rokon Bepari, Syed Mehedi Hassan, initiators of the festival, also addressed the programmes.
Speakers and participants of the programmes demanded preservation, implementation of the Dhansiri River eco- park project and excavation of Dhansiri River, establishing museum, memorials and sculptures of the poet in places connected with his life, works and memories.
They also stressed for more study and research on life, works, ideology and influence of the poet on Bangla language and literature.
Born on February 17, 1899, Jibanananda Das is arguably the most influential romantic poet of the post-Tagore era. He died in a road accident on October 22, 1954 in Kolkata.
