Coronavirus outbreak: Independence Day programme cancelled

The government on Saturday decided to cancel all programmes of the Independence Day including placing wreaths at the National Martyrs’ Memorial in Savar and the reception programme at Bangabhaban amid fears over the coronavirus.
President’s Press Secretary Mohammad Joynal Abedin confirmed it to journalists.
He said that the decision was taken at a meeting held between President Abdul Hamid and Prime MinisterSheikh Hasina at the Bangabhaban. The press secretary also informed that the Swadhinata Padak (Independence Award) giving ceremony has also been postponed.
The President and Prime Minister also discussed the overall situation regarding the coronavirus outbreak in the country and urged the citizens to remain calm and quiet and not to be panicked.
Prime Minister called on the President at Bangabhaban around 5:00pm, he said.
