Some 23 persons were arrested in Chitalmari (under Chitalmari Upazila) in Bagerhat district so far when a clash took place between the police and the agitated crowd over an indecent comment passed against Islam and its Prophet by a college girl of Chitalmari Degree College through in her face-book recently.
Police informed that when the comment became viral a strong resentment was created among the locals on June 20 and they decided to give the college girl a good lesson. Being informed of the matter police arrested the college girl on the day and took her into the police custody in order to subside the resentment and the agitation created among the people. But in spite of that a large number of agitated crowds surrounded the Chitalmari PS and demanded to hand over the girl to them for her punishment. But when the police rejected the demand the agitated crowds attacked the police and began to pelt brick-bats to the police station. Finding no other alternative police took action against them. But as a result, the crowd became more furious and began to ransack the public properties. Then the police opened several rounds of gun fire to disperse the agitated crowds. In the clash a number people including police personals were injured.
In this connection SI Shamim Hawladar registered a case with the PS as the plaintiff against 59 identifying persons and as many as 250 unidentified persons on the charge of attacking the police personals and ransacking public properties including motor vehicles. In this connection police have so far arrested 22 persons. On the other hand, Rubel Munshi, President of Chitalmari College unit of Banglades Chatra League (BCL) lodged a case with the PS against the college girl on the charge of hurting the religious sentiment of the people through posting an indecent comment against Islam and its prophet in her face-book. Police arrested the college girl on the charge of insulting Islam and its Prophet. All the arrested persons were already sent to the court by the police.
Md. Mahmudul Hossain, Additional Police Super of Bagerhat Sadar Circle admitted the fact and told, police are trying their best to arrest the rest accused persons.
