 Incessant rain and onrush of water from upstream have caused flash flood in vast areas under Gangachara, Kawnia and Pirgachha upazilas of Rangpur district during last few days.
Over 90,000 families have been marooned while thousands of hectares of transplanted Aman paddy and vegetable fields have gone under water as swelling Teesta caused flash flood there from Saturday , sources said.
Most flood affected unions include Kolkond, Nohali, Lakkhitari, Alambiditor, Gajghanta in Gangachara upazila, Tepamodhupur, Haragachh,Balapara and Shahidbag unions under Kawnia upazila while Tambulpur, Chhawla,Kandi and Koikuri unions under Pirgachha upazila.
Thousands of the flood-hit people have taken shelters on highlands, flood control embankments and other institutions and the administrations have started relief activities in many affected places.
The flood affected people are now suffering much owing to scarcity of fuel, food, fodder and shelter, sources said.
The homeless families alleged that they have been passing hard days but are yet to get any help from neither the government nor any non government organisations. A number of affected people said that there seems to be no body to realise their misery.
“With the hope to earn handsome profit I cultivated vegetables with loan money but the flood has dashed all my hopes,” said Sajedul at Soudpara village in Gangachara upazila.
“My house and crop fields have been submerged by flood water from the Teesta river leaving me a pauper, said another flood victim Bachchu, 55 of Char Morneya village under Kawnia upazila.
Besides, a huge quantity of fish from many ponds and other water bodies have been washed away by the floodwater, causing a massive financial loss to hundred of farmers under the flooded area in the three upazilas.
According to affected fish farmers and fishery officials the loss would be over Tk 15 crore, said.
According to District Relief and Rehabilitation office sources distribution of relief has already been started in many flood-hit areas. Union parishad chairmen of the flooded areas have been asked to prepare lists of the affected people to provide them necessary food and other supports.
BSS from Dinajpur adds: With a further rise in the water levels of the Punarbhava and Atrai rivers, the flood situation in the district worsened today.
Local administration sources said over 9 lakh people in 13 upazilas have fallen victim to the flood caused by heavy rain and onrush of waters from the upstream.
The railway and road communications of Dinajpur with the capital have remained snapped since Monday afternoon.
Executive Engineer Fayzur Rahman of Bangladesh Water Development Board (BWDB) said the Punarbhava river was flowing 85-cm above the red mark this morning. The Atrai was flowing 83-cm above the danger mark during the same time, he said.
Meanwhile, authorities have closed down schools, colleges and madrasas across the district because of the flood.
Civil Surgeon Dr Golam Mawla Chowdhury said a total of 110 medical teams are working to help the flood victims.
