A day-long workshop on increasing productivity of bean crop in Sylhet region has been organized by the Department of Horticulture, Sylhet Agricultural University with the support of Agricultural Research Foundation (KGF). The workshop was inaugurated on Thursday, Vice Chancellor of Sylhet Agricultural University, Prof. Dr. Md. Matiar Rahman Hawladar inaugurated the workshop.
Sylhet Agricultural University Research System (SAURES) Director Prof. Syed Sayem Uddin Ahmed presided over and Associate Professor of Horticulture Professor Dr. Bishwzit Debnath conducted the workshop. Vice-Chancellor Prof. Dr. Md. Matiar Rahman Hawladar spoke as the chief guest in the performance.
KGF’s executive director Zibon Krishna Biswash spoke as the main sponsor. Additional Director of Sylhet Department of Agricultural Extension Dilip Kumar Adhikari and Dean of the Faculty of Agriculture Prof. Dr. Md. Asad-ud-Daulah also spoke as special guests.
The main researcher of the project, Professor Dr. presented the main article. Md. Shahidul Islam. Speakers at the workshop expressed their views on increasing the income of farmers at the marginal level including enhancing soil quality by planting bean crop in fallow fields during Kharif and Rabi seasons in Sylhet region. At the same time, they said, the farmers of Sylhet region will be able to improve their living standard by cultivating Sikribi bean-1, Sikribi bean-2, Bari bean-1, Goalgabda bean and French beech, barbati in advance. They said it is possible to harvest beans at home in 50 to 55 days.
The speakers called upon the stakeholders to conduct research on safe vegetable production. At the workshop, Iqbal Siddiqui, President of Sylhet Press Club, Emran Hossain, a successful farmer from Nabiganj and Md. Ruhul Amin Shim, a successful farmer from Gowainghat shared their advice and experience on early cultivation. Note that the workshop was attended by marginalized farmers including teachers of different universities, scientists of various research institutes, extension officers and staff, NGO officials.
