Importing low-quality Vitamin for children a punishable offense

The authorities concerned have recently postponed the ‘Vitamin-A’ campaign due to the low-quality of the capsules imported from India. Under the ‘National Nutrition Programme’, the capsules were scheduled for distribution among country’s 2 crore 2 lakh children aged from six to 59 months to prevent night blindness. The programme was announced in the previous week. The capsules were sent to different areas following the announcement. The field level workers and officials of Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) at first found that quality of the capsules was of low category. They informed the matter to Director General of DGHS. Later, the Health Ministry instantly postponed the programme. The Health Ministry and the DGHS have formed two separate inquiry committees, which include scientists, to probe the matter.
DG of DGHS said many capsules were found stuck together and they did not take any risk to administer those capsules to the children. The prompt decision by the newly appointed Health Minister to postpone the programme is really appreciating. Newspapers reported that a local pharmaceutical company had initially got the permission to supply the capsules. But an Indian company went to court against the order and won the case. Health Minister directly said that standard of the Indian company was not up-to-the-mark. He also assured to unearth the mystery behind it. It’s highly surprising as to how and why these low standard capsules were imported. It doesn’t need to be a medical expert to understand that children have weaker immune systems and so, any faulty medicine could be harmful for them.
Corruption is allegedly widespread in the health sector. Recently, an accountant of DGHS was quizzed for several hours at ACC interrogation cell for accumulating huge wealth including four houses in the capital and one in Australia. We do strongly suggest giving exemplary punishment if anyone is found guilty in the investigations for importing low-quality capsules.
