Implementation of Kalurghat Bridge Project stressed

Kalurghat Rail-cum-Road bridge was built about hundred years ago by the erstwhile British regime over the Karnaphuli River.
 This is only communication bridge in between South Chattagong specifically for the people of Boalkhali, Patiya Chandanaish Upazila and Bandarban, Cox’s Bazar.
The people of South Chottagram are worst sufferers following the totterling conditions of the bridge for the last two decades. The rail communications over the present tottering Kalurghat bridge on the way of closure at any moment. If the rail communication is closed over the century old bridge, the proposed rail communications from Dohazari to Gundum will be meaningless.
In this connection, an official letter from the Chattogram City Corporation was sent to Planning Minister AHM Mustafa Kamal to expedite the implementation process of the proposed Rail-cum-road bridge within the shortest possible time. Chief Executive officer of CCC Md Shamsudoha confirmed the news to this reporter on August 2 last. Mentionable that the proposed mega railway bridge project was approved in the cabinet meeting last year.
The estimated cost of the bridge project was Tk 1,165 cr of which South Korea desires to fund Tk.1,146 crores in this project.
The project was supposed to be completed by 3 years from 2020. In the DO letter of City Mayor, requested the Planning Minister to extend utmost cooperation for approval of the project in the next ECNEC meeting, sources said.
