All the illegal structures in the capital’s residential areas will be demolished by October this year.
The decision was taken at a high-level meeting, held at the Housing and Public Works Ministry here today.
“The eviction drive, which has already begun, would be expedited soon to tear down all the unauthorised buildings and other structures in the capital’s residential areas to ensure security and safety of the city dwellers,” Housing and Public Works Minister Engineer Mosharraf Hossain told journalists after the meeting.
The minister chaired the meeting attended by the high officials including Housing and Public Works Secretary M Shahidullah Khandoker, Chairman of Rajdhani Unnayan Kartipakka (RAJUK) Bazlul Kairm Chowdhury and National Housing Authority Chairman Khandaker Akhtaruzzaman.
The government last week also decided to conduct drive against unauthorised commercial infrastructure including restaurants, hospitals and educational institutions in the city’s Gulshan area against the backdrop of the recent militant attacks.
Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) in April also identified the illegal structures in Gulshan area and issued letters to the people concerned regarding the eviction drive.
Following the Sunday’s meeting, the housing minister said that the eviction drive would be carried out to remove all the illegal establishments including bars, guesthouses, hotels, hospitals, schools, clinics and offices from the residential areas in the capital city.
Referring to a decision of the cabinet division taken on April 4 this year to make residential areas free of illegal structures in the next six months, Mosharraf said following the decision the authorities concerned made a list of illegal establishments in the residential areas and sent letters to the owners concerned regarding the drive.
According to the minister, a total of 2379 different illegal commercial entities have so far been identified while eviction notice were served to the owners of 329 illegal structures.
Besides, the concerned authority realised Taka 2.92 crore as fine from the owners of the unauthorised structures in residential areas and evicted 431 ramps and 138 car parking during their drive.
