Illegal current nets worth about Tk four crores were seized and four guilty traders were punished and fined on Wednesday afternoon..
A Mobile Court led by Assistant Commissioner (Land) Matlab Dakhshin Upazila and Executive Magistrate Ms Nusrat Sharmin sentenced two banned current nets traders in Matlab Dakshin Bazar to suffer one year’s jail term each and fined two other traders Tk five thousand each on charge of dealing in and storing illegal and banned new current nets.
The jailed traders are Pronoy Das,30 and Biplob Dash,35,.
The two other traders are Mithu Debnath,26, and Shah Alam,35,- all from Matlab South.
Acting on a tip off, the Mobile Court , comprising UNO, Coastguard commander, Upazila Fisheries officer and Matlab Paura Mayor, was launched in a godown(warehouse) at around 1 pm at Matlab Bazar. Then, 18 lakh 62 thousand metres of banned new current nets , contained in 49 sacks, were recovered and seized. The nets belonged to the above mentioned four traders.
The valuation of the seized nets is approximately Tk 3 crore 72 lakhs 40 thousand.
