Illegal construction of food court protested in Barishal

An agitation rally was held on Thursday noon at mass killing ground protesting on going illegal construction of a food court since last few days near the place.
The programme was organised by Muktijuddha Sangsad, Barishal City and District Command and it was presided over by Sk. Qutubuddin Ahmad, District Commander.
It was participated by freedom fighters, journalists, socio-cultural-professional -environment activists and local elites.
Among others, by Mokhlesur Rahman, Enayet Hossain Chowdhury, Freedom Fighters, Syed Dulal, cultural leaders, Sushanta Ghosh, journalist, Shuvangkar Chakraborty, development organizer, addressed the programme.
The speakers said WAPDA complex was used as cantonment of Pakistani occupation forces and bunkers, torture cells, mass killing ground during liberation war in 1971.
So the premise should be preserved as part of history of liberation war. We think that on-going construction of the food court adjacent to the mass killing ground will hamper proper prestige and environment of that historical place and should be stopped and evicted.
If not, then they holding an agitation programme, we will evict under construction establishment to maintain and preserve proper honour of the freedom fighters and martyrs of liberation war, the participants cautioned.
The speakers also asked implementation of the master plan for beautification and construction of monuments at mass killing ground and places related history of liberation war.
After the rally at mass killing ground, a team met with the deputy commissioner of Barishal at his office and informed them about there ultimatum.
Habibur Rahman, Deputy Commissioner, Barishal, said the land was owned by government under Khas Khatian no.1. At that moment Aktar Faruk Shahin, one of the entrepreneur of the under construction food court, over telephone informed the deputy commissioner that, they will remove the constructed portion and construction materials from the site immediately and willingly.
Earlier, he claimed that the construction was started legally by taking lease from Barishal City Corporation to facilitate hygienic food with health and sanitation facilities for the visitors of that historical place.
Md. Shakil, estate officer of BCC, said he does not know about the lease process and no file or plan was approved for that by BCC for that.
A team led by historian Prof. Muntasir Mamun visiting the spot and meeting with district administration also expressed their solidarity with the protestors on Saturday last.
Sources said that in the document of Akter Faruk Shahin, he along with Qamrunnahar, wife of his brother and BCC official, Idris Molla, Nurul Alam, Dil Md. Khan Swapan, Shahadat Hossain, BCC employees or relatives of BCC officials, jointly took the lease of a land there on May 30, 2018 from BCC and started construction of a food court since last few days.
