Staff Reporter :
Inspector General of Police (IGP) AKM Shahidul Hoque on Tuesday said that the police and other law enforcing agencies are unable to guard all the houses across the country with the limited manpower and other logistic supports.
He also advised the countrymen to build security-cordon for themselves after taking the necessary help of the police personnel.
The IGP made the statement in the morning while visiting the crime scene at Dhaka’s Kalabagan where LGBT magazine editor Xulhaz Mannan and his friend Mahbub Tonay were hacked to dead on Monday morning.
Shahidul Hoque said, “The dwellers of cities and towns have already been requested to install CCTVs to their apartments and houses to increase security measures. We have arranged a lot of meetings with them regarding the matter.”
“If somebody do not to set up CCTVs at their apartments, then police have no chance to bound install the device. The government
needs to formulate the law to bound inhabitants installing the CCTVs to ensure security,” he said.
He said, “It is a planned murder and the killers had long been following Xulhaz to carry out it. Some of their styles are similar to the acts of the militants. We are looking for their connection in this regard. Police are trying with their utmost efforts to unearth the mystery behind the murders.”
“We do hope we’ll detect the killers and bring them under the law,” the police chief said. He, however, did not find any lapses on the part of police.
The IGP advised the citizens to be cautious round the clock. “Every individual should have a sense of security. They should be aware of their own security, security of their neighbours and also of the locality.”
“We could have detected evidence of most of the criminal incidents committed by militants in the past and recovered firearms and explosives used by them. Many of the perpetrators are now in detention,” he added.
As for the Rajshahi University English Department Prof Rezaul Karim Siddique murder, he said police have already made much headway in the ongoing investigation and the findings would be disclosed soon.
Regarding the style of Xulhaz murder, he said it bore similarities with the gruesome killing of Rajshahi University Prof Rezaul Karim Siddiquee, who was murdered on Saturday.
In reply to a query from journalists on the failure of intelligence bodies to thwart the killing, the police chief said the cop units are assigned to report the country’s overall security concern, not to follow any individual.
Regarding police’s role over stopping these killings, the police chief said, “Everybody should be aware of own safety. It is not possible for police to guard all houses.”
“We have expert investigators. Earlier, we had spotted the militants for their missions. Hope, the criminals responsible for this murder will be nabbed soon,” the IGP hopped.
Seeking assistance from all, Shahidul Hoque said they will give their final statement after concluding the investigation.
He also mentioned the government’s ‘zero tolerance’ stance to violence and commented that any untoward incident would be prevented collectively.
