Staff Reporter :
Inspector General of Bangladesh Police Benazir Ahmed raised question if there is a gunfight, would the law enorcers drop their guns and run away. “When such a dangerous armed gang starts firing, will we sit ideal to be martyred?” He asked.
The government has provided weapons to the police to prevent terrorists from illegal activities. Government weapons are used to save lives of people if it is needed, he added.
The police boss was responding to a question
from reporters at the inauguration ceremony of the newly constructed building of Rajarbagh Central Police Hospital in the capital on Wednesday.
The ‘gun battle’ was stopped for several months after Major (retd) Sinha Rashed Khan’s death. But, three people were killed in a shootout with RAB in the Shalban hills of Rohingya camp No. 26 in Cox’s Bazer Teknaf area on Tuesday afternoon.
Asked about the gunfight, the IGP said, “Jokir is a dangerous robber. Go, go to Cox’s Bazar and get the information about him. People in Chittagong-Cox’s Bazar region know what Jokir was, how many people were abducted by him and how many were killed.
At least 150 different types of weapons were recovered from him in the last three years. Nine weapons were recovered from his possession after he was shot dead Tuesday. When such a dangerous armed gang starts shooting, will we get martyred?”
Benazir said “The government had provided weapons not for use as sticks. The stick is one thing and the lethal weapon is another. If the government only gives sticks, we will use sticks.”
Replying to another question, the police chief said that what has happened, I think, will happen in the future if necessary.
The IGP said that the new building will increase the ICU, CCU and HDU capacity of the hospital. Police personnel are performing their duties in a very challenging environment. There are a lot of heart, lung, kidney and cancer patients in the police force.
We spend crores of taka every year to get treatment outside of the country. We are trying to make this hospital a complete hospital so that all kinds of treatment can be ensured, he said.
