The International Crimes Tribunal on Monday condemned fugitive Idris Ali Sardar alias Gazi Idris of Shariatpur to death for his crimes against humanity during the Liberation War in 1971.
The three-member tribunal, headed by its chairman Justice M Anwarul Haque, pronounced the verdict.
Earlier on Sunday, the tribunal fixed on Monday for announcing the verdict.
All the four of charges, including mass killing,
murder, kidnapping, torture, looting and arson attack, were proven, the ICT pronounced in the verdict. The tribunal has handed down the death penalty on charges 1 and 2 brought against him while sentenced him to jail unto death on charge 3, and to seven years’ imprisonment on charge 4. Another accused of the charges Solaiman Mollah alias Soleman Moulvi, 84, from Kashipur Muslimpara, died at Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) on October 25 last due to old-age complications.
Earlier on November 2, the ICT kept the case on CAV (curia advisory vault) after closing the law-point arguments from both sides. State-appointed lawyer Advocate Gazi MH Tamim stood for Idris Ali while prosecutors Ziad Al-Malum, Rishikesh Saha and Rozina Sulnata Chomon represented the state. Thirteen witnesses testified before the tribunal against the accused. On May 2 last, the ICT framed charges against the two Razakars in the case. Earlier on October 29, 2015, the prosecution submitted the probe report against seven Razakars, including Solaiman and Idris, containing 852 pages before the tribunal.
