Staff Reporter :
Members of Islami Andolon Bangladesh (IAB) from a rally on Friday demanded of the government removal of the ‘statue’ of the Greek Lady Justice from the Supreme Court premises before Eid-ul-Fitr.
They also threatened to launch countrywide tough movement if their demand was not met.
Thousands of the followers of Chormonai Peer gathered at the north side of Baitul Mukarram National Mosque after the Jumma prayers on Friday.
They were seen chanting slogans against the statue and the role of the government.
They also tried to parade different roads in the capital but the police stopped them at the Purana Paltan intersection.
Publicity Secretary of IAB Ahmad Abdul Qayyum said that thousands of their activists had come to Dhaka from across the country to join the rally.
He also demanded that the Themis statue be removed before the end of the month of Ramzan, threatening to blockade the Supreme Court premises after Eid if their demand was not met.
IAB’s Ameer and Chormonai Peer Mufti Syed Muhammad Rezaul Karim was present at the rally, among others.
Maulana Halim Azad, a worker of the organisation, said, Islam doesn’t support to set up statue or idle in any place. But the idol of Themis set up near the Jatiya Eidgah. There is no scope to keep it. If not removed, the result would not be good, he said.
Earlier on April 20, the IAB had also given an ultimatum to the Supreme Court regarding removal of the statue.
