Sylhet Correspondent :
In failure of having dowry money from wife’s family, a heinous husband named Belal brutally cut off his wife’s tongue and tendon of one lag at the village of Darsha under Sylhet Sadar Upazila in Sylhet on Thursday at around 7-30 p.m. Wife Suma Begum has been undergoing treatment at Sylhet M.A.G Osmani Medical College Hospital.
It has been learnt from Jalalabad Thana and Suma’s family that Suma Begum was married to Belal Miah of Lamua village under South Surma, Sylhet in 2008. Within three years Belal got another young woman married. Hafiz Miah, elder brother of Suma and her sister-in-law (Hafiz’s wife) Ruma Begum told this correspondent that Belal used to torture Suma for dowry for which she (Suma) came back to his paternal house. On Thursday Belal and his accomplices came to Suma’s father’s house of Darsha and demanded money. As Belal could not extract money, he got infuriated, hold Suma and tied her with her scurf and cut her tongue off and tendon of one leg.
Hearing hue and cry the neighbours came forward, recovered Suma and admitted her to Sylhet M.A.G Osmani Medical College Hospital.
Suma’s mother lodged a case under Dowry and Woman Repression Act with Jalalabad Thana on Friday. Police arrested Suma’s mother-in-law Jibunnessa this morning while Belal is absconding.
