Hundreds of tourists are stranded on St Martin’s Island in Cox’s Bazar on account of the inclement weather.
The tourists went to the island between Friday and Tuesday. Some of them tried to return, but the local administration did not permit them.
The Cox’s Bazar Meteorology Office sources said the sea might remain stormy due to floating clouds. For this reason, warning signal No. 3 has been given. It has been asked to keep fishing and navigation of tourist ships in the sea and Naf River suspended till the further direction is given.
Manager of the tourist ship Keari Sindabad Mohammad Shah Alam said the tourist ships like Keari Sindabad, Keari Dinning & Cruise, MB Bangalee, LCT Kutubdia, Green Line, Bay Cruise and LCT Kajal regularly navigate in the Teknaf- St Martin’s route. But around three thousand tourists couldn’t return to their destinations due to rain and stormy weather.
Chairman of St Martin’s Union Parishad Nur Mohammad said the navigation of ships was halted due to the foul weather early Wednesday. As a result, a good number of tourists are still there.
We are taking care of the stranded tourists so that they don’t suffer for foods and drinking water.
Teknaf Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Rabiul Hasan said that when weather conditions returned to normal, tourists will be brought back from St. Martin safely.
Security, accommodation and other issues of the stranded tourists are being monitored so that they have not faced any difficulty, he said.
Meanwhile, around five thousand tourists couldn’t go to St Martin’s. No ship could go to Teknaf from the island due to inclement weather since early in the morning on Wednesday.
Local administration said the stranded tourists are however safe. Many tourists were bound to stay in the hotels and motels failing to go to the island. Some of them are returning from there.
