Human traffickers to be under ACC scanner

Staff Reporter :Based on specific allegations, the Anti Corruption Commission (ACC) will go for action against suspected human traffickers who accumulated unusual money through smuggling people. “Being notified about the recent news on human trafficking, we have decided to carryout investigation about the sources of wealth and properties of suspected human traffickers,” ACC Director General Shamsul Arefin told journalists at a press briefing at its headquarters in the city on Sunday.He added, ACC officials are now collecting information about the sources of wealth and properties of the human traffickers. “The ACC has attached the highest importance on newspapers’ reports about the human traffickers,” Arefin said. He also details activities of the institution since January to April this year. “Some 2,798 allegations have been lodged with the ACC between January and April. Out of the total allegations, we have decided to carryout investigation against 232 allegations,” Arefin said, adding some 81 cases were disposed of during the period.He said, out of 81 cases, accused of 54 cases were released on bail while 27 others awarded jail.Replying to a query Arefin said most of the accused in corruption cases get bail due to absence of sufficient witnesses.When asked about the latest development of Hallmark and Destiny corruption cases, he said the ACC has already submitted charge sheets in two cases against 51 officials of Destiny Group for swindling nearly Tk 4,119 crore of the investors’ money from two projects. “Many officials, including the Managing Director of Destiny Group Rafiqul Amin, are now languishing in jail,” the ACC DG said.
