`Save Our Sreepur Union from river erosion. River already eroded our houses, Bazar, land, office, religious, educational institutions and rapidly advancing to erode away the total Union under Mehendiganj Upazila of Barisal district’.
Participants of a two-hour long human chain programme held at the bank of the estuary of Tentulia, Kalabadar and Kazir Done rivers near Sreepur launch station, urged this.
`We want to live on our own soil, please save our land from severe river erosion’- the speakers and participants of human chain said .
The people of Sreepur Union under Mehendiganj upazila of Barisal organized the human chain programme under the banner of ‘Sreepur River Erosion Savior Committee’, presided over by Lokman Hossain, convener of the committee.
Among others, Harunor Rashid Molla, Chairman Sreepur Union, Mastar Marazul Haque, Mahmud Hasan, Shakhawat Hossain Rubel, Mamtazul Huq, Nimai Chandra Devnath, Mawlana Anwar Hossain, addressed the programme.
Speakers said, river erosion in the area already eroded Sreepur Bazar, over five hundred houses and shops, Union Land Office, community clinic, Baherchar primary school, even the recently constructed cyclone center which yet not inaugurated, under severe threat of eroding away at any time.
This erosion continued since last two years but no step taken yet taken to prevent that, the locals alleged.
Mamatazul Haque, ex-teacher said` one third land of the union already eroded and now whole area of the union under severe risk.
Abu Sayed, Executive Engineer of Barisal WDB, said they heard about the speedy erosion of the river at Sreepur Union and sent a report to higher authority.
Lokman Hossain, one of organizer said over hundred shops eroded last 3-4 weeks and no body taken any step to protect Sreepur Union from river erosion.
After the human chain pogramme, a team of the participants handed over a memorandum to the deputy commissioner demanding immediate step for saving Sreepur from river erosion.
