BSS, Rangpur :
The cattle markets have been witnessing huge supply of sacrificial animals in Rangpur region following remarkable boost in the local animal husbandry sector in recent years.
However, trade of sacrificial animals is yet to get momentum as the buyers have started visiting cattle markets some 10 days ahead of the Eid-ul-Azha festivity now to check price of locally reared healthier cattle heads.
According to markets sources, demand of the locally reared cattle-heads has increased as sacrificial animals in recent years following ‘ban’ imposed on ‘exporting’ cows from the neighbouring country.
Sources in the Department of Livestock Resources said demand of the locally-reared cows, bullocks, calves, goats, sheep and other animals generally shoots up before the Eid-ul- Azha festivity every year.
According to Taraganj Upazila Livestock Resources Officer Mahfuzar Rahman in Rangpur, the livestock sector has marked laudable boost following various pragmatic steps taken by the government towards the directions.
Chilmari Upazila Livestock Resources Officer Dr Golam Rabbani in Kurigram said the locally reared cattle heads would be enough to meet local demand of sacrificial animals as farmers in the mainland and char areas achieved tremendous success in the sector.
Meanwhile, the administrations and authorities concerned have taken adequate security measures, set up currency screening machines in the cattle markets and are conducting patrols for ensuring smooth carrying of cattle heads.
According to the buyers, they prefer to purchase the locally reared better quality bullocks, calves, cows, goats and sheep than the illogically fattened ones creating a real chance for the farmers in getting better profits.
Meanwhile, the bigger animal traders have started sending their locally purchased cattle heads to the capital city and other parts of the country as price of the same is reasonable in the region now for huge supply.
In the bigger cattle markets, an extra large bull was selling yesterday at rates between Taka 65,000 to 80,000 against last year’s Taka 60,000 to 75,000 and large one at Taka 48,000 to 55,000 against last year’s Taka 45,000 to 50,000.
A medium-size bull was selling at Taka 35,000 to 45,000 against last year’s Taka 30,000 to 40,000 while a small one at Taka 28,000 to 35,000 against Taka 23,000 to 25,000 last year a week ahead of the Eid-ul-Azha festivity.
Meanwhile, goats were being sold at higher price and the big goats being sold at Taka 18,000 to 22,000, medium- size at Taka 12,000 to 15,000 while a small one at Taka 7,000 to 10,000 at different markets in Rangpur and other adjoining districts.
BSS from Rajshahi adds: With only ten days left for the Eid-ul-Azha, the second largest religious festival for the Muslims, cattle markets in the city and nine upazilas of the district along with its adjacent areas have gained momentum with numerous buyers and hundreds of sacrificial animals.
A huge number of sacrificial animals are being brought for sale at different cattle markets like City haat, Naohata haat, Baneswar haat, Keshor haat, Kanthakhali haat, Rajabari haat, Kakonhat, Mohisalbari haat and Machmoil haat.
Rajshahi City Corporation allowed installation of eight makeshift cattle markets in the metropolis which began to draw huge cattle, including imported ones from Myanmar as well as India.
Traders said there were plenty of supplies of cattle in the markets and their prices were similar to the last Eid-ul-Azha. The price of an ideal sized cow or buffalo starts from Taka 30,000 to 80,000 and a sheep or goat can be purchased from Taka 5,000 to 25,000 according to size.
In addition to the city’s biggest cattle market-City haat, some temporary markets have been set up at Court Bazar, Shaheb Bazar Zero point, Railway Station, Court Station, Naodapara Aam Chattar and Kazla.
