BNP spokesman Mirza Fakhrul Islam on Wednesday alleged that human rights in Bangladesh are not only at risk but also on the verge of annihilation as the state itself is snatching people’ s all the basic rights.
“When the whole world is making all-out efforts to protect human rights, Bangladesh is an exception in it as people’s basic rights are being snatched every day here by the state,” he said.
The BNP leader further said, “The current regime is on the spree of killings, enforced disappearances and other extrajudicial killings using the law enforcers. Human rights in Bangladesh are not only endangered but also close to elimination.”
Fakhrul, the BNP acting secretary general, came up with the remarks while addressing a press conference at BNP’s Nayapaltan central office.
He strongly protested the issuance of a warrant for the arrest of BNP senior vice chairman Tarique Rahman in a defamation case, saying the government is filing false cases against those who are opposing it and raising voice against it. “They also filed a defamation case against constitution expert Dr Tuhin Malik.
Fakhrul claimed that the government is trying to suppress the opposition’s movement by resorting to false cases and harassment of opposition leaders and activists, including Tarique.
He warned the government that it will not be to cling to power for long by indulging in repressive acts.
Earlier in the day, a Dhaka court issued warrant for the arrest of Tarique Rahman in a defamation case filed for his “disparaging remarks” against Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.
On November 17, a Tk 100 crore defamation case was filed in a Dhaka CMM court against Tarique Rahman for his “derogatory remarks” on Bangabandhu.
Fakhrul came down heavily on Anti Corruption Commission acting chairman M Shahabuddin Chuppu for criticising BNP chief Khaleda Zia at a programme as she dubbed it as a ‘corrupt commission’ and ‘indemnity commission, saying Chuppu made irresponsible comment about their party chief.
“Holding a constitutional post what he (Chuppu) said about our chairperson is devoid of courtesy. He also exceeded his jurisdiction by making such remarks,” he added.
Claiming that Chuppu was the president of Rajshahi University unit Chhatra League during his student life, the BNP spokesman demanded the government remove him from the ACC.
Fakhrul called upon the government to rescind its decision to hike power and gas tariff in the interest of the country’s people.
He also warned the government that they together with the country’s people and other political parties will wage a united movement to resist it.
The BNP leader also renewed the 20-party’s threat to announce aback to back protest programmes from the day the government will increase the gas and power prices.
Terming the current regime illegal, he also alleged it has indulged in widespread corruption and limitless plundering in the power sector.
