A Dhaka Court on Wednesday sent to jail a house owner of Dhaka’s Panthapath area in a case filed on charge of beating and ousting the family members of a tenant as they failed to pay the rent in due time during the crisis amid coronavirus pandemic.
Judge of the Metropolitan Magistrate Court of Dhaka, Abu Sayeed, passed the order after rejecting a remand petition for five-day filed by the Kalabagan Police.
Earlier, on Tuesday night Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) members arrested house owner, Noor Akhter
Shampa from Dhanmondi area of the city.
“The police produced her in the court yesterday (Wednesday) in a case filed on charge of attempt to murder of her renter and prayed to send her on a five-day remand. After hearing, the court sent her to the jail and rejected the remand prayer,” said Investigation Officer of the case Sub- Inspector Saidur Rahman of Kalabagan Police Station.
The house owner, on April 18 expelled a tenant family which has husband-wife and their three children including one of two-month aged as one month house rent was due. Later the law enforcers requested the house owner to keep the tenant family on humanitarian ground. But, the house owner denied and threatened the law enforcers. Later, the tenant family filed a case with the Kalabagan Police Station against the house owner.
Officer in Charge (Investigation) of Kalabagan Police Station AFM Assaduzzaman said, Noor Akhter Shampa was arrested from Dhanmondi area of the city in the case on Tuesday night.
Assaduzzaman said, “Selim and Kulsum Begum couple rented a ground floor of a five-storey house in Panthapath area in December last year. They could not pay the rent for the month of March as they had fallen in a financial crisis due to the coronavirus outbreak. As a result, the house owner ousted them from the house at 9.00 pm on April 18.”
“We requested the house owner to keep the family in the house at least on that night. But, she denied,” added the police officer.
