Hossainpur (Kishoreganj) Correspondent :
The carpeting has been done in various places of the important road of Beribandh to protect the flood-affected char areas from Garbishudia Porabaria to Charkatihari, Charhajipur, Hajipur Bazar in Hossainpur Upazila. As a result, thousands of hectares of crop lands will be submerged in the flood waters during the monsoon season.
According to the relevant sources, the embankment was constructed by the Water Development Board to protect the agricultural crops in the flood affected areas of Jinari Union of the upazila a few years ago. Although most of the road was repaired under the supervision of LGED, 3 years ago, due to lack of proper maintenance, carpeting has been removed in various parts of the road and small and big potholes have been created. Pedestrians and vehicles are moving at risk. Every day hundreds of truck-lorries, tomtoms, auto-rickshaws and other school-college students and pedestrians have to travel at risk. As a result, accidents are constantly happening on the road at one place or another. The number of deaths is also increasing. The travel of pregnant women, children and the elderly by road has now become more risky. As a result, there is a possibility of extensive damage due to flood water entering the area during the coming monsoon season.
As a result, the embankment project that was undertaken to protect the villages in the char region from floods will be ruined.
In the vast crop fields of Char Katihari, Charhajipur, CharhatarAlgi, Hajipur villages of Jinari Union of the upazila, different types of vegetables, radishes, carrots, tomatoes, eggplants, green chillies, garlic, onions, paddy and many more crops are produced. Vegetables produced in these regions are exported to different parts of the country, including local markets. Local farmers in these regions are becoming economically self-sufficient by selling their produce. But at present due to the dilapidated condition of the road, the crops and vegetables produced cannot be exported to different parts of the country including the local market and the raw vegetables are being wasted in the field.
Fazlul Haque of the local Charhajipur Village, Alam of Charkati Hari Village and many others said that even though the embankment has been dilapidated and dilapidated for a long time due to lack of repair, we do not understand why the authorities are indifferent. They are urging the higher authorities to speed up the repair of this road.
In this regard, the Chairman of Jinari Union Parishad, Abdus Salam said although they had written to the LGD for the renovation of the embankment, they were procrastinating on the pretext of the Water Development Board. However, if the version is not done quickly, there is a possibility of huge damage to the crop land in the area due to flood waters, he said.
Upazila engineer Ghalib Morshed said, “I have visited the spot.” Demand letter has already been sent to the Ministry of Public Engineering for Beribandh version. As a result, work on the version will start quickly, he said.
