As the number of burn patients is increasing day by day due to the political unrest, medical college hospitals both private and public in capital Dhaka and in district towns have started opening new burn units to meet the need of arson victims.
The government has drawn up a plan to extend the services to the upazila level soon. Under it, all government and private medical colleges and hospitals must have a burn and plastic surgery department. Specialised health institutes, district hospitals and upazila health complexes will also have such facilities, official sources said.
In the capital, burn patients do not want to go to Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College and Hospital or Sir Salimullah Medical College and Hospital due to the poor facilities there. Among several private hospitals in the country, only City Hospital at Lalmatia in the capital has some facilities for burn cases, but treatment there is expensive.
MAG Osmani Medical College in Sylhet, Comilla Medical College, Chittagong Medical College, Rangpur Medical College and Rajshahi Medical College have separate burn units, but due to lack of experienced manpower and modern equipment, serious patients are referred to Dhaka Medical College and Hospital (DMCH).
Almost a decade has passed since the specialised burn unit was set up in DMCH, but it is yet to be transferred from the development sector to the revenue sector in the national budget due to corruption.
In this tremendous crisis scenario, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU) authorities have opened up a burn unit comprising 10 beds for the arson victims on Sunday.
This unit will be expanded in the near future according to patients’ demand. Prof Dr Pran Gopal Dutta , Vice-Chancellor of BSMMU, inaugurated the new burn unit where all burn victims will get treatment free of cost.
The authorities of Barisal Sher-e-Bangla Medical College have also decided to start functioning of a burn unit. Sources said a 16-bed burn unit is ready to start operation, almost 45 years after the establishment of the hospital.
Dr Kamrul Hasan Selim, director of the hospital said of the 16 beds, eight beds would be reserved for men while rest of the beds will be for women burn patients.
A full-fledged burn unit comprising six beds was opened at Gonoshasthaya Nagar Hospital in the capital on its Dhanmondi premises on February 13.
“What we will do is to ensure necessary and emergency treatment, essential for a burnt patient at the initial stage,” said Prof. Mohammed Shawkat Ali, head of forensic medicine.
Our Feni correspondent says, for treating burn victims, a burn unit was opened at Feni 250-bed Sadar Adhunik Hospital on February 9. Civil Surgeon (CS) and Acting Caretaker of Feni Sadar Hospital Dr Mohammad Yusuf disclosed this to journalists on Saturday morning.
The CS further said the ‘Post Operative Room’ of the hospital has been turned into ‘Special Care Unit’ (Burn Unit). The unit comprises six beds capable of treating six burn victims at a time under two consultants and one specialist nurse.
Resident Medical Officer (RMO) of Feni Sadar Hospital Asim Kumar Saha said six burn victims have been sent to the Burn Unit of DMCH after treating them locally. From now on, burn victims would be treated at the Burn Unit of Feni Sadar Hospital, he said.
