When panicked Covid-19 patients are searching hospital beds to get proper treatment, huge number of beds remain empty across the country.
It is surprising demanding an explanation.
There are 14,945 general beds in Covid-19 dedicated hospitals, but 4361 only are admitted.
A total of 10,584 beds are blanks in those hospitals.
Besides, there are 394 Intensive Care Unit (ICU) beds in those hospitals while 168 beds are remaining emptying.
There are total 15,339 general and ICU beds in coronavirus dedicated hospitals and among them 4587 beds are filled by admitted patients and 10,752 beds remain blanks.
Professor Dr Nasima Sultana, Additional Director General (Administration) of the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS)
said it in a regular press briefing on Friday.
She said that there are 6305 general beds in the corona dedicated hospitals in Dhaka city where 2199 patients are admitted and 106 beds are empty.
Besides, 108 patients are taking special medical care in 142 ICU beds where 34 beds are blank in those hospitals, Dr. Sultana said.
In Chattogram, 313 coronavirus infected patients are taking while 344 beds continually remaining empty.
Dr. Sultana said there are 39 ICU beds in the port city hospitals where 15 Covid patients are under special medical care while 24 ICU beds are empty.
When contacted, Professor Dr. Nazrul Islam, former Vice Chancellor of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU) told The New Nation on Friday, “We know that number of patients were seek for hospital beds to get medical treatment after detecting Covid-19 positive reports. Many of those failed to get any bed in Covid-19 dedicated hospitals as per media reports. In these circumstances, we are do not understand why most of the hospital beds are remain empty.”
Professor Nazrul Islam, also Member of the National Technical Advisory Committee of Covid-19 said, it may be possible that some rumours spread among people that the hospital officials are reluctant to render treatment to coronavirus patients. Thus the patients and their relatives shun the way to pursue a bed in hospitals.
It may be a cause for beds remaining empty, he added.
He however, said, many of the patients think that it will be better to stay at homes and take doctors advice through telephone than being admitted in hospitals.
Contacted, Professor Dr. M. Muzaherul Huq, former Advisor of World Health Organisation (WHO) told The New Nation, “Firstly, patients have not trusted hospitals about getting proper medical treatment. So they stay away from those hospitals.”
Secondly, he said, most of the infected persons know that it is better to stay isolated at home.
Meanwhile, sources from hospitals officials, doctors and patients said that patients and their family members lost trust in hospitals as many of them got bitter experience from hospitals like the city’s Regent Hospital.
They feared from wrong treatment from such hospitals.
Many of them feared of unreasonable treatment cost like Anwar Khan Hospital of the city.
Patients and their relatives said, hospital staffs are used to misbehave with the Covid infected persons such as throwing foods and medicines to them from far away like a beasts confined in cage of zoo.
Those above mentioned reasons are make the hospitals bed empty besides, the patients are being treated in their own house through telemedicines systems.

She said, about three to five percent Covid-19 patients fall in severe condition and those have to admitted in hospitals ICU beds.
It is why the number of hospital beds are remaining blank, she added.
Dr. Sultana also said we also arranged telemedicine systems where we receive about one lakh to one and half a lakh telephone call everyday.
