Staff Reporter :
An expecting mother was allegedly driven away by staff members of a maternity clinic in the city as she failed to give them the money they demanded for delivery charge.
In the consequence, the ill-fatted woman Pervin Akter, 26, delivered a baby boy on the maternity compound, but the child died eventually due to lack of necessary post-delivery supports that leaves behind endless questions to answer as an accused.
This tragic death and horrific behaviour with an expecting mother touched the hearts of all, but not the cruel staff members of the maternity clinic.
The incident took place at Azimpur’s Mothers Care and Children Health Training Center (Maternity) on Tuesday morning.
Sohel Rana, a relative of Parvin Akter, told the journalists that she was brought to the maternity clinic early in the morning yesterday. But some staff of the hospital demanded Tk 1,500 from the woman’s attendants as delivery charge. But they failed to pay the demanded money instantly.
Then a nurse and another female drove the mother out of the labour room of the clinic, Sohel alleged.
Within minutes, the woman gave birth a baby boy on the maternity compound at around 8:00am, but sadly the newly born baby died within five minutes of birth.
Relatives of Parvin said that earlier she was taken to Dhaka Medical College and Hospital (DMCH) and Mitford Hospital early morning, but they failed to get her admitted in both the hospitals also for want of sufficient money.
Parvin Aktar is now under treatment at the Azimpur’s Mothers Care and Child Health Training Center (Maternity). She was allowed to admit there as relatives of the ill-fated mother and local people rushed to the hospital and their expressed anger over the incident.
When contacted, Dr. Israt Jahan, the Superintendent of the Maternity said,
“It is totally unacceptable to demand money from the mother of an expecting baby. We have formed a committee to probe the incident. If any staff of the clinic is found guilty, we will punish him or her.”
Dr. Israt also said that some tout and outside brokers used to disturb us during duty hours. They may be involved in the matter.
