UNB, Dhaka :
Ashura, commemorating the martyrdom of Hazrat Imam Hussain (RA), was observed across the country on Sunday with due religious fervour and solemnity.
On this day in the Hijri year of 61, Hazrat Imam, the grandson of Prophet Hazrat Muhammad
(PBUH), along with his family members and 72 followers embraced martyrdom at the hands of Yazid’s soldiers in the desert of Karbala to uphold the teachings of the Prophet (SM).
President Abdul Hamid and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina have issued separate messages on the occasion.
Shia community members brought out Tazia processions in the city in the morning marking the day.
The Tazia procession started from Imambara Husaini Dalan in Old Dhaka with police escort.
Adequate security measures were taken around Imambara Husaini Dalan to ensure smooth observation of Holy Ashura. Apart from Husaini Dalan, police were deployed on the rooftops of some buildings at some major points around the Imambara for security reasons.
Enhanced security was also provided in the Imambara where the Shia community gathered to commemorate the day, which is one of mourning. However in a departure from tradition police banned carrying of metal weapons, knives, swords and other sharp weapons during the Tazia procession.
Bangladesh Betar, Bangladesh Television and private TV channels are airing special programmes highlighting the significance of the day.
